Psychotherapy

What is Psychotherapy?

A partnership between individuals (clients) and a professional that helps them understand and modulate their feelings and assists them to change behaviour patterns.  Psychotherapy is sought by clients who want to work on long standing problems and/or unresolved past conflicts that affect current functioning.

People often consider psychotherapy under the following circumstances

  • they feel an overwhelming and prolonged sense of sadness and helplessness, and they lack hope in their lives
  • their emotional difficulties make it hard for them to function from day to day, for example, they are unable to concentrate on their job and performance suffers as result
  • their actions are harmful to themselves or to others, for instance, they drink excessively and/or become aggressive

People seek psychotherapy when they are suffering from anxiety disorders or depression. Nearly 25% of the adult population in North America suffers at some point from anxiety or depression.
